One of the earliest films to define the film noir genre, Underworld is a 1927 American silent crime movie directed by Josef von Sternberg, featuring Clive Brook, Evelyn Brent, and George Bancroft.
This film marked the beginning of Sternberg's eight-year partnership with Paramount Pictures, during which he created seven films starring actress Marlene Dietrich.
The screenplay, crafted by journalist and writer Ben Hecht, earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Story.
In the story, the lively gangster kingpin Bull Weed helps his former lawyer recover from alcoholism, but things get complicated when the lawyer develops feelings for Weed's girlfriend.
