Ménilmontant is a 1926 avant-garde film from France, crafted by the talented Dimitri Kirsanoff, who both wrote and directed it. The film takes its title from a neighborhood in Paris.
Featuring performances by Nadia Sibirskaïa, Yolande Beaulieu, Guy Belmont, and Jean Pasquier, the story follows two inseparable young sisters who, after losing their parents to assassination, move to Paris. There, they find themselves drawn to the same charming young man.
In line with many silent avant-garde films from France, Ménilmontant showcases a blend of various styles and innovative techniques, including the use of double exposure, which was quite groundbreaking for its time.
Renowned film critic Pauline Kael even declared Ménilmontant to be her all-time favorite film.
